Will there be another season of Into the Night?
Though there has been no official word from Netflix yet, the signs so far are good. The majority of Netflix’s debut series from European countries have been renewed for at least two seasons, with shows like Spain’s Club de Cuervos, Germany’s Dark and the Italian Suburra: Blood on Rome getting commissioned for multiple seasons. As Belgium’s first Netflix original, therefore, Into the Night might act as a flagship for the country’s content.
The show seems to have been a ratings hit, featuring in Netflix’s top 10s in many countries, which is another good sign for its future.
Into the Night is based on the novel The Old Axolotl by Jacek Dukaj, which provides plenty more material if Netflix wanted to continue the show. The official plot synopsis for the novel reads: “The Old Axolotl is an exhilarating post-apocalyptic tale about a world in which a cosmic catastrophe has sterilized the Earth of all living things. Only a small number of humans have managed to copy digitalized versions of their minds onto hardware in the nick of time.
“Deprived of physical bodies, they continue to exist by uploading themselves onto gigantic industrial robots, sophisticated medical machines, mechs designed for hard labor, military drones, star troopers and sexbots based on Japanese manga.”
By the end of Into the Night’s first season, viewers have only got as far as the cosmic event. The show’s cast spent most of the episodes trying to escape before ending up in a bunker full of survivors, who say they have found a way to emerge from the shadows.
This suggests that if Into the Night Season 2 does happen, it will see the survivors emerge into the toxic light in new robot forms for a very different set of episodes. Of course, an entire race of robots would be pretty expensive to produce, which might be a factor in Netflix’s decision as to whether to renew the show for more.
There has only been one season of Into the Night so far, so it is difficult to know when to expect a second season, but a likely release date is in mid-2021.
As for when Netflix will announce the future of Into the Night, the streamer usually waits at least one month before making decisions, so that they can look at 30 days worth of data to see how successful a show has been. This means that we may know about Season 2 by early summer.
